Friends of Historic Northport is working together to bring to the shores of the Black Warrior River the 1882 King Bowstring Bridge, the oldest iron bridge span in Alabama and one of the oldest in the southeast.
Friends of Historic Northport is requesting donations for the 1882 Bridge Relocation Project. This historic iron bridge is the only known surviving piece of the four spans that originally crossed the Black Warrior River connecting Northport to Tuscaloosa from 1882 to 1896.
This bridge span was relocated to northern Tuscaloosa County where it has been left unused for decades. FHN, along with the City of Northport, has proposed refurbishing and relocating this important historic bridge to the levee just beyond downtown Northport. At this location, the bridge will be accessible to the public as well as a visible reminder of Northport’s cultural heritage.
